Our Story

In 1975, Rev. Kenneth C. Haugk, Ph.D., was a young pastor and clinical psychologist, serving a congregation in St. Louis, Missouri. He quickly realized there were many more needs for care than he could possibly meet alone. So, he equipped nine parishioners as the first "Stephen Ministers," who helped him meet the needs for confidential Christian care in his church and community.

Today, you'll find Stephen Ministry in more than 14,000 congregations from more than 190 Christian denominations, across the U.S., Canada, and 30 other countries.

The Caregiver's Compass

Caregivers-Compass Stephen Ministry.png

The Caregiver’s Compass is a meaningful symbol within Stephen Ministry, guiding caregivers in their mission of compassion and confidential care. It highlights four essential qualities of a Stephen Minister: compassion, a strong faith foundation, skilled listening, and trustworthiness. These characteristics equip Stephen Ministers to walk alongside those facing difficult seasons of life with grace and understanding.

At the center of the Compass is a Christ-centered focus — a reminder that Christ guides every action, conversation, and decision.
